The winter season can lead to dry skin for many people. Having the following products on hand will help prevent and treat dry skin.
Cold winter weather can cause dry skin to the face, lips and body. Even worse than dry skin, it can also cause chapping. Chapped skin is when the skin begins to be rough, red, and/or crack. The skin can also begin to split and become sore.
Changes in our skincare routine may be necessary in the winter months. Adding a few extra products or changing some of the current products in the skincare regime can help prevent damage to the skin from the winter weather.
These following products will keep one's skin soft and smooth no matter what the weather is like outside.
- Body Scrub – Because winter can cause dry skin that flakes, using a scrub will help smooth and soften the skin. If the dry skin is extremely bad, use the scrub every day for a couple of days. After that it will only be necessary to use it once or twice a week. There are many body scrubs on the market in every price, scent, and ingredient combination. When choosing a salt scrub, remember that the salt can irritate the skin, especially if there is a breakage such as cracking, cuts or abrasions from having just shaved. Philosophy’s Gingerbread Man Hot Salt Scrub is great! Not only does it have a gentle gingerbread scent, but it is also self-warming, which feels great when it is cold outside. Bath and Body Works makes a great sugar scrub in Relax that is scented with Eucalyptus Spearmint.
- Body Lotion – Body lotion is a given when one suffers from dry skin. But it will only provide maximum benefits if the dry skin is exfoliated beforehand with a body scrub. After trying many body lotions for dry skin, the one that provides the most emollient is Lubriderm Advanced Therapy Creamy Lotion. This lotion can be found at any major department store or drug store.
- Hydrating Facial Cream – No matter whether one suffers from dry or oily skin, winter weather can create havoc for all skin types. One company has covered both bases for dry skin. Mary Kay Cosmetics has two hydrating facial creams: one for normal-to-dry skin and the other for combination-to-oily. Both products are oil-free and water-based solutions. The Intense Moisturizing Cream for Dry Skin is thick and luxurious lotion. The Oil-Free Hydrating Gel for Oily Skin is lightweight, so as to avoid causing further problems with oil, but it will help prevent dry skin.
- Lip exfoliant and lip balm – It seems our lips get most of the punishment when it comes to winter weather. The best way to prevent dry, chapped lips is to exfoliate and then moisturize. Many products are available to exfoliate the lips, but there are also two simple at-home versions. One is to use an old clean toothbrush and gently massage the lips. The other is to take a small amount of Vaseline and massage the lips with a dry, soft washcloth. Vaseline can also be applied afterwards as a lip balm.
- Vaseline – Vaseline is also a great product to have on hand to use on extremely dry hands, feet, and elbows. Smooth a generous amount on hands and feet, than apply socks and gloves. Either sleep with the gloves and socks on, or lie down and relax to a movie. In a short while, the skin will be soft and supple.
