Homemade Halloween costumes are easy to make especially if choosing a popular character such as a zombie. Simply get some old clothes or buy some cheaply from a thrift or charity shop, tear them up a little, stamp all over them, add some safety pins then apply the right zombie makeup.
The clothes are straightforward but makeup can be difficult unless certain scary “props” are used. Theatrical makeup or masks are often used to great effect but a unique spooky and hypnotic look can be achieved by wearing coloured contact lenses, often eliminating the need to add heavy facial makeup.

There are hundreds of websites selling crazy contact lenses. Choose from spiral lenses for a real hypnotic zombie feel to bloodshot or dark red blood-filled eyes, just right for a Dracula look. Or maybe go for all black, fluorescent green, glow in the dark orange or become a zombie werewolf with a yellow and black stare.
Zombies are brain-dead monsters and eyes need to gaze straight ahead, oblivious of anything or anyone. Coloured lenses create the perfect look and can be worn by anyone as they are available with or without eye correction.
Wearing Halloween Contact Lenses
Many wild-looking cosmetic contact lenses sold specifically for Halloween are sold with zero eye correction, known as plano lenses. It does mean that people who don’t normally wear contact lenses can use them but if you need lenses for correct vision, it can be harder to find the exact style in the right prescription.
It’s important to remember that contact lenses are classed as a medical device by US Federal Law. To protect consumers from online retailers selling cheap, low-grade contact lenses which could damage the eyes, buyers are required to submit a prescription from their optician before a purchase can be made online. This is required even if the wearer does not need prescription eyewear.
When shopping around on the internet, beware of sites that do not ask for a doctor’s prescription or ones that offer unknown discount brands. Caring for Coloured Contact Lenses

Take care not to insert lenses with dirty hands, or after applying heavy makeup or hairspray with glitter, as particles can get onto the lenses causing severe eye irritation. Similarly take care to thoroughly clean lenses after use and be sure to store them in saline or multipurpose solution, changing the solution regularly if planning to store the lenses for several months.
Never put lenses in water to save money on buying contact lens solution and never share or swap theatrical contact lenses with friends as a quick way of trying on a different Halloween costume. Severe eye infections can occur with improper use, causing blindness in extreme cases.
Halloween Eyes with Coloured Lenses
Be different this Halloween. Wear some old clothes or just turn up in jeans, a dark top and dark sunglasses before revealiing all. Makeup is not necessarily required when all a zombie needs is a spooky set of Halloween eyes, courtesy of some coloured contact lenses.
