Looking tan helps make a person look healthy and fit, but the sun damages skin and causes premature aging, wrinkles, freckles, leathery skin and skin cancer.

According to the National Cancer Institute, the estimated number of new nonmelanoma cases in 2009 will be 1,000,000, resulting in less than 1,000 people. Fake tanners are the way to go for a safe, darker complexion. But they are not all created equal. The old self-tanners turned skin orange or left streaks. The new ones are much better, combining new technology for updated products.

Colored Lotion Makes for Even Coverage

Faux Tan by Bare Escentuals is different than most of the lotions, creams, and sprays on the market. To begin with, it comes out of the tube in a light brown lotion so it’s easier to see where it’s going. This eliminates missed patches which can be embarrassing. Having a big white patch on the back of a leg while the rest of the limb is evenly tanned is something that is difficult to repair.

Besides being easy to see it also eliminates the over-colored areas of ankles and knees that is common with many of the self tanners. The texture of the lotion is smooth and creamy and there is a light fragrance. And the lotion dries in a few minutes. Once dry it will not rub off on clothing.

After applying the lotion the company recommends washing the palms of hands and under fingernails immediately so they will not be discolored. They also do not suggest using the Faux Tan on faces, although many people have said they do and it works fine for them.

Bronze Color

The color of the tan is beautiful. It’s not orange or yellow. It’s the color that is seen on the sunbirds in the South of France. It’s a beautiful bronze – a healthy looking color. For best results, exfoliate skin before applying the lotion. Reapply the lotion as often as desired for the perfect shade of bronze. Unless reapplied, the color will last up to a week.

To get that great summer glow on cheeks and faces, Bare Escentuals recommends their Faux Tan All-Over Face Color. Combined with the Faux Tan on the rest of the body, this makes a rich, healthy, “spent the week in Hawaii” look.

Good for Skin

Faux Tan moisturizes and hydrates with Aloe-Vera and vegetable derived emollients so under the bronze color the skin will stay smooth and healthy looking, and not blotchy.

Just one note – this product does not contain sunscreen an SPF sunscreen must be applied over the tanned skin to prevent burns and cancer.

It’s summertime. Why not get the look of a bronze goddess (or Adonis) without the skin damage from the sun?
