Shopping for Cheap Beauty Products

Saving Money on Makeup, Skin Care and Hair Products

Jul 30, 2009 Ashley Smith

Between makeup, skin care and hair products, even a simple beauty regimen can get expensive.

It’s possible to avoid spending a fortune by thinking twice about when and where to get the best beauty products.

Shop Discount Stores for Beauty Products

Discount stores like Marshalls and T.J. Maxx have come a long way when it comes to beauty products. They sell high-end lines like Bed Head hair products and Lancôme makeup and skin care products, to name a few, for a fraction of the original price. And selection has improved over the years.

The downside to shopping discount stores for beauty products is that selection is still limited. A shopper won’t always find exactly what they want. But for those who are willing to spend a little extra time browsing and those who are open to trying new products, there are great bargains to be had.

Contrary to what some may think, there’s usually nothing wrong with the products when they’re sold at discount stores. The bottles could be damaged, the line discontinued or a store could have sold off excess inventory. The one big exception to this is mascara: sometimes it’s dry by the time it makes it to discount store shelves.

Buy Beauty Products in Bulk

Bulk stores like Sam’s Club and Costco sell more than just food products and home goods. They also carry a fairly wide selection of bath and beauty products like shampoo and conditioner, body wash and hairspray. Shoppers can find both drug store and salon grade brands in jumbo sizes.

The only downside to buying bath and beauty products at bulk stores is that the shopping trip will be a little more expensive than the typical drug store run. But the investment will pay off in the long run because bulk products tend to be less expensive per unit. Buying in bulk also means fewer shopping trips, saving time and gas money.

Sign Up for Beauty Product Discount or Frequent Shopper Programs

For those who dig high-end beauty products, some stores offer perks to shoppers who sign up for rewards programs. Plan to give up an email address though, and receive updates or sale notifications once a week or so.

Sephora, for instance, has a program called Beauty Insider that offers members discounts on certain items and bonuses like free samples with a purchase. Members also get a free sample upon signing up and birthday gift each year.

Rummage Through the Drug Store Sale Bin

Sometimes these are hard to spot when buried in the back of the store. But smart shoppers can score some good deals by rummaging through the sale bins that drug stores put out from time to time.

Sale bins are hit or miss, of course, but they often contain beauty products that have been discontinued. Score a bottle of self tanner for half the price because the company has changed the look of the packaging, or get a cheap bottle of nail polish because the color isn’t part of the new fall line.
