Castile soap was a luxurious item. Produced in the Castile region of Spain, it soon outshone its rivals by using 100% olive oil and quickly became the top-of-the-range soap sought after by European Royalty. The alternative soaps made in the north of Spain from animal fat and tallow were quickly shunned by the wealthy, and apothecaries across Europe began to carry the best: Castile Soap.
A true Castile soap should contain 100% olive oil, although many people believe it can be classed as Castile if it contains more than 50% olive oil. Extra virgin oil contains a lot of emollients; this means that the soaps don’t leave the skin feeling dry.
And today? Soap made from olive oil is top-quality, natural and – if it comes from Andalucía – has a low carbon-footprint. Add to that fresh and natural flavours, and you have a unique and desirable natural product fit for royalty.
Where better to produce natural soap made with olive oil than the main olive oil growing area of Andalucia? And that's just what Andalucia Soap Company does. The business moved from Wales via France to the source of its main ingredient – olive oil from Southern Spain.
Now based in the province of Seville, the hand-made soap company uses other natural fruits of the land that grow in the Mediterranean such as oranges, lemons, avocado and aloe vera along with different vegetable varieties.
Andalucia Soap Company offer the largest range of hand-made soaps in the world, but it's not only soap they produce. A whole range of other hand-made beauty products that use only the best ingredients packed with natural anti-oxidants that help prevent skin deterioration are also made.
Body scrubs, active creams, body butter and bath salts all add up to a fine selection of a quality green skincare range.
With names like Berry & Cherry, Rose & Hibiscus and Mango & Orange for the bath aromatherapy tablets and Eucalyptus & Poppy and Ti-Tree & Seaweed for exfoliating soaps – they even sound relaxing!
The company likes to use the best to create the best in a way that works with the planet and in no way endangers any part of the planet's eco-system. This is also the reason they use the more expensive ingredients like olive oil instead of cheaper oils like palm oil. Their tenets? Not doing things fast and concentrating on achieving high quality rather than high quantity.
Extra virgin olive oil makes a really mild and gentle and of course natural soap, so it's rare for anybody to be allergic to these soaps, but for people who have allergies, a completely fragrance- and colour-free soap, made from the olives first pressing is available.
Andalucia Soap Company have just introduced a natural dog soap too!
