Cult beauty brand Cake Beauty's creator Heather Reier makes irresistibly scented, dessert-inspired beauty products designed to nourish and indulge your body and your mind

Cake Beauty was founded by Heather Reier in 2003 and immediately caused a stir. Many beauty brands use the link between desserts and body products (Lush, Jessica Simpson's line of dessert body products), but Cake was somehow different. Reier was able to marry both sweet and delicious-smelling products with nourishing, luxury ingredients without creating something inaccessible or cheap.

Cake Beauty's Concept

In the early 2000s, Political Science major Reier was a full-fledged, self-admitted product junkie, but had noticed an empty niche in the beauty market. This is when the philosophy of Cake began to develop; Reier wanted to develop a line of products made with nourishing ingredients, encased in sophisticated packaging and touting a fun, indulgent concept.

She worked in her Kitchener, Ontario, Canada kitchen intially, learning about the properties of ingredients and using only those that fulfilled physical, emotional and textural needs.

Luxurious, fun and decadent products containing such ingredients as shea and mango butter, whole milk, coconut and jojoba oils, turbinado sugars and essential oils was the outcome. Reier also came up with creative and playful names such as Milk Made Velveteen Hand Crème, Cake Walk Triplemint Foot Creme and Mint Cashmere Cream Glistening Supreme Body Mousse and designed the product packaging to have a girly, stylized feel.

Cake Beauty Products

Some of Cake Beauty’s best-sellers include:

Satin Sugar Refreshing Body and Hair Powder. A luxuriously velvety, talc-free, calendula and chamomile-infused powder that can be used to absorb oils and moisture and smooth and delicately scent the hair or skin. Keep it in your purse for quick touch-ups and try sprinkling it in your hair after a workout. Satin Sugar Refreshing Hair and Body Powder won a 2007 Chatelaine Innovation Award.

Sweet Cheeks Sinfully Smoothing Brown Sugar Scrub. Made with turbinado sugar packed in rich olive, sunflower and coconut oils, the Sweet Cheeks body scrub is an incredibly luxurious, intensive exfoliator and moisturizer that leaves your skin smooth, scented and supple. It’s an exfoliator/moisturizer in one that is perfect for winter when your skin is naturally drier.

Desserted Island and It’s A Slice. Two of Cake Beauty’s most popular products are its Supremely Rich Bath and Shower Froths and matching Body Mousses. Desserted Island smells like it sounds with coconut and Tahitian vanilla and It’s A Slice is scented like an orange creamsicle. Both shower froths are made with Virgin Oil de Coco Crème (the most superior grade of coconut oil available) and are extremely soothing and moisturizing for the skin.

The It’s A Slice and Desserted Island body mousses have the same scents as the bath and shower froths, but are rich moisturisers made with pure coconut oil, decadent mango butter, rich macadamia nut oil and aloe vera for an indulgent moisturizing skin treat.

Plane Friendly Travel Kit. When airlines began limiting the liquids travellers could take in their carry-on luggage, Cake Beauty was one of the first beauty brands to offer a plane-friendly kit. It also works well as an introductory sampler to the products and a gift. The Plane Friendly Travel Kit contains five 2.2 fl.oz containers of the It’s A Slice and Desserted Island Supremely Rich Bath and Shower Froths, the It’s A Slice Supremely Rich Body Mousse, the Desserted Island Supreme Body Mousse and the Milk Made Velveteen Hand Crème (which smells like a gourmet vanilla marshmallow that's melting).

Where to Find Cake Beauty

Cake Beauty can be found at Sephora’s Canadian locations, at online shops such as www.makeup.com and the Cake online store, and it multiple boutiques and spas worldwide. A full list of retailers can be found on the Cake Beauty website.

Cake products must be smelled and tried to be believed, and it’s highly likely you’ll immediately be hooked!
